HECTOR CAIAZZA  “The Concept”

As a child, my toys had a much shorter lifespan than those of my friends. I was always more interested in how they worked rather than what it did – in other words I took all of my toys apart. Some I rebuilt, but most became a collection of parts that I used to assemble new toys that started with a thought or concept I had in my head. I guess you could say that I was a born designer and problem solver.

My inspiration comes from putting myself on the spot – not knowing how to do something, but knowing it can be done. For me, it has always been about the journey, not necessarily the destination. During my career, I found great joy as a professional toy developer, and later developing attractions for Sea World, Busch Gardens and Warner Brothers Theme Parks. With TORK Design I can utilize everything that I have learned and experienced to help design and craft a line of furniture and lighting that is elegant, functional and a bit fun in nature.

For me, I learn more from failure than I do from success. With success, the process or product is complete. With failure the possibilities become limitless as refinements, additions, new designs and prototypes need to be created, driving an entirely new line of potential products in my mind. Pieces can be repurposed, existing resources reused and problems can be solved by trial and error. At TORK Design, I feel immense joy when someone says that our products are an extension of who they are as individuals. My passion is to create, but I still enjoy taking things apart. Just don’t tell my daughters or they may start hiding all their toys.
